Many people are still wondering why twitter is such a huge phenomenon, and how you could actually leverage it to start making a lot more money this year in your business and start driving a qualified traffic.

The great thing about twitter is you actually have direct access to people, who you had never had access to before. We are talking about gurus, potential clients, and possible joint venture partners. So we want to start leveraging twitter, and using it the right way. A lot of people are not seeing the big picture and are wondering why they should use twitter, and to those who are not using it, it seems like a waste of time.

Why is twitter such a powerful marketing tool?

Let's take a look. twitter was literally designed to become viral by nature and the reason that happened is there is a re-tweet option - it is a micro blogging platform where you could literally, in 140 characters or less, tell people you what you are doing. As human beings we are curious and like to know what is going on behind the scenes. So by asking, “What are you doing?” You can pretty much tweet about anything.  And what ends up happening is each tweet that you re-tweet actually ends up going on to the search engine as well, so it is just this phenomenon that has caught on.

In 140 characters or less you can share what you are doing, where you are at, how you are feeling, a piece of content, video link, blog post URL or article, etc.  

Here are the steps to set up a twitter account so that you too will see the power of twitter, and start seeing results.

1st Step:  Set up your FREE twitter account at:  www.twitter.com.

If your Firstname Lastname is available, get it right away!  If your name is not available, create a catchy twitter username.  For example.  www.twitter.com/askYOURNAME.  One you have created an account, fill in your "profile" information to be interesting facts about you.  A few keywords or an interesting quote will do.

Look around other twitter accounts that are in your industry and get ideas of what their bios look like. 

Add your URL on your bio.  I would recommend to use your lead capture page so you can build your list.

2nd Step:  Set up a Background.

Twitter is a snapshot of who you are, so you will want to set up a professional background and theme.  If you cannot afford to have one Brand to yourself, below are two websites that you can get twitter backgrounds for free.

Both of these sites use free backgrounds, or for a couple of dollars, you can add your own "badge" to their pre-designed formats.  Whatever you do, just make it nice and stand out and be unique!

3rd Step:  How To Find Friends/Followers & Prospects

Below are three great resources that will help you find people that are in your niche market.  I love these tools because we are able to locate our "target market".

When reaching out to your followers, target those in your niche. Likewise, be selective about who you follow, as they should also be in your niche. Search.twitter.com will help you to do this. If you are in the weight loss industry, type this into the search, and you will find people who want to lose weight. Why not follow those people and start a conversation? Once you build that relationship they will start trusting you and will be more inclined to go to your website.

Spend 15-20 minutes per day randomly going through profiles to follow people that are in your target niche.  Follow the people that stick out to you and have similar interests!  Approximately 30-50% of everyone that you follow with automatically follow you back.

Search.Twitter.com is an awesome search tool where you can find specific keywords that people have tweeted about in the last few minutes.  This will give you the fastest response time for follow back.  Chances are they are still online.



Twitter, like any social networking site, is all about building relationships.  As you are developing your followers and adding people every single day, participate and retweet the posts your friends are sharing.

For example, if you see that Mia Florides just posted that she loves her gift baskets, go and send her a  personal message by typing "@miaflorides" (@+twitter username) and get to know her!  Introduce yourself and begin the relationship building process. 

4th  Step:  Manage Your Following

I want you to do a 1:10 promotional tweet ratio: 1/10 tweets can be promotional. Meaning, if you have 1000 followers, you do not want to exceed much more than 1100 people you yourself are following.

 
Delete all of those people who DO NOT follow you back after a few days.  To do this automatically through sites like:  www.friendorfollow.com
 
You can connect it with your Twitter account and one by one unfollow those who are not reciprocating.
 
Twitter has taken an active stance on any of the software's that automate the process of adding or removing friends.  But this shouldn't take you more than 10-15 minutes a few times a week.
 

5th Step:  What Do You Tweet About?

I like to tweet things that are inspirational: quotes, personal development ideas, etc. That is just my personal style. Find your twitter style - be yourself and you are going to find what works for you. If you are someone that is really fun, be really funny. If you are someone who is very much a thought-leader, and you have a lot of technology, and you have a lot of valuable content, I recommend that. Bring in your personally, whatever it is, into your twitter conversation and verse.

You should tweet valuable content, or link to other blogs, but what if you are just getting started and you do not have much content? Doesn't matter - you can be known as someone that provides value by linking to other blogs and providing content to your followers that way. This way you are still adding value to your tweets, even if it is not your own, and psychologically, as they learn, they will link it back to you. And be sure that all the while you are doing this with personality.

This will it will give you links to the hottest trends on twitter, Digg, PopularToday, Flickr, Yahoo, Technorati, New York Times and Google News.

Always  keep your followers in the know, because the more you do this, the more you will become perceived as a leader, and as an expert. I want you to become a center of influence on twitter, and it is all based upon how you position yourself. Inspire others and share your stories and your life. People want to get to know you, and if you are intriguing to them, they will want to know what you do in your free time and how you live your life. They want to know about your content and value that you can provide them. They want to hear your how-to's on your expertise and your niche. So again, have fun with this and be entertaining.

You want to build relationships, and ask open-ended questions. A lot of people ask, “What should I tweet about?” Think about questions that will intrigue your followers to respond: “What is your favorite personal development book?” What that does is engages people, as you do not want to be pitching and selling your products on twitter - this is not its purpose. People can tweet you back, and you can tweet them back and build a relationship with them. You might see some sales from this, but we are focusing on using twitter for long-term results.

Tweet your Videos:

You should Tweet your videos once you create them to strengthen your online presence. You are looking to create a social media sales funnel, so the more people see you everywhere on twitter, Facebook, and YouTube, the more they remember you, and the more chances you have to bring in those people as customers. 90% of communication is non-verbal - it is body language, and videos will allow you to develop and creating your brand faster. Create how-to videos and content videos, even if it is a simple tip or trick, people will appreciate it. From there, I encourage you to train your followers to re-tweet your videos.

Being the leader means guiding people as to what to do next. You will give them a call to action, letting them know that you just posted this new video for them, and to please re-tweet it to their followers. In turn, they are going to love you for it. The more you do this the more it is going to go viral and your video views are going to go up. You are also going to see your follower count go up, and people are going to start re-tweeting you. There is something called pound hash sign follow Friday. The more value you provide, the more people are going to be inclined to re-tweet you and that will put you in front of not only your followers, but theirs as well.

6th Step:  twitter's 2000 Rule

As it stands right now, you can only follow 2,000 people before twitter will stop you from adding any additional followers UNLESS you have 2000 followers yourself.

Follow the process that we shared with you, add followers in your niche, get to 2000 and delete all that are not following you back.  Continue this process until you have surpassed the 2000 hump and then you are golden.

Still stick to the 100% ratio, never follow more than 110% of the people following you.

The purpose of twitter is to teach you how to build a loyal fan base, and how to build a following no matter where you are starting from. The main focus is to increase your traffic, how to convert that traffic into paying customers. Then I will teach you how to make even more money from your current customers. But first you must position yourself years ahead of others right now, by building your solid foundation. I encourage you to be proactive, and to go there to both seek out and provide information.
